Community Defense
Basic Princples of Community Defense Program

- DIRECT ACTION. We believe taking matters into our own hands is the only way to effectively challenge and stop the wars being waged against our communities. We do not seek reformist strategies as a productive, nor effective tactic towards getting rid of police repression as well as the police state.

- SELF DEFENSE. We support the principles of self-defense. We share the philosophy that self-defense resides within a diverse array of tactics, some which are at times more readily exercised than others. However recognizing the importance that all play a necessary role in defending our right to live free from oppression.

- REVOLUTION. We are dedicated to revolutionary working class struggle against the system of white supremacy, capitalism, sexism, state, and any other forms of social or political oppression. We want to create a new and better world over the ashes of the current one.

- CONSENSUS / POLITICS. We do not have any rank in command, nor representative body that makes decisions. We believe in a consensus decision making process where every individual is directly involved in the organization of the program. We are anti-authoritarians, however we are open to work with any other groups and individuals as long as they respect our principles.

What does the program do?

Cop Watch

Cop Watch is a program where people patrol the streets with video cameras ready to document police activity whenever it occurs. The purpose for this is to document police every time they make a stop. If police begin to harass or brutalize civilians, it is caught on film. Cop Watch also notifies civilians of their rights to educate them on dealing with issues of police abuse.

Zone Defense Units

Zone Defense units are foot patrols deployed in specific neighborhoods to document police activity whenever it occurs. Each unit wears visual identifiers so they can be recognized by people in the community. Each zone has a 24-hour call-in number for people to contact if they notice police activity in their neighborhood. Each zone has it's own patrol and call-in number for it's local area. When police enter a designated zone, it is considered a breech, and therefore Zone Defense Units coordinately deploy to monitor, follow, document and confront any and all police activity if whenever necessary. As the long-term goal for Cop Watch is to document police activity to insure that police do not interfere with peoples rights, the goal of Zone Defense is for communities to be able to protect themselves against police attacks by utilizing a greater arena of strategic and tactical approach.

Defense Education

We hope to provide free public information, weekly classes and workshops on self defense which is not otherwise readily available to the community. Our effort is focused towards a diverse array of self defense tactics and strategies. By learning and studying these strategies and tactics, we hope we can become familiar with self-defense on all levels. We must train ourselves physically as well as mentally.

Why a "Community Defense Program?"

The brutality, criminalization, murder and repression of our communities - particularly those of color - by racist and corrupt police forces will continue to remain rampant until we organize an effective movement by taking matters into our own hands.

Protests and marches are useful, however they do not directly challenge the abusive authority of police on a daily basis. With this in mind we seek to organize a revolutionary community defense program. We see this as the only effective solution towards ending a never ending problem. Police brutality will not stop unless we take direct action to make it stop.

The U.S is the most repressive government in the world; repressing communities all over the world. With an occupied military force invading Iraq, to the occupied military force right here at home. If we want to stop the war then we must fight it on both fronts. With more blacks locked up in prison than in college in a country with the largest prison population, with police gunning people down in our streets, to the FBI and Patriot Act invading our privacy and raiding homes, it's a war with a front line right outside our door.

The purpose of the RACUN Community Defense Program is to establish a revolutionary form of self-defense within the community. By establishing various programs throughout the community, we can develop a sense of community control with the disciplinary independence, and self-sufficiency of direct action aimed towards community empowerment. We hope the fullest measure of community defense can prevail so our communities can eventually declare themselves liberated territory, independent from the repressive jurisdiction of the political and class state.
