Kevin Rashid Johnson, the defense minister for the New Afrikan Black Panther Party-Prison Chapter (NABPP-PC) and an inmate in Virginia's super-max prison Red Onion, was brutally assaulted earlier this month by prison guards. Behavior such as this is nothing unusual at Red Onion and Rashid is a regular target. His basic rights of access to medical care, mail, phone, and finances are regularly denied. He frequently lacks legal assistance in the trumped-up cases the state charges him with, that are solely meant to harass him.
Rashid is a victim of this perpetual abuse because he is an undaunted, committed activist and organizer. He is outspoken in the quest for a more healthy world. He is also a prolific writer and artist. But, Rashid is not the only victim of this systematic abuse. Red Onion is infamous for its unusually harsh treatment of prisoners.
