Raisethefist.com: Garzon to insist on fair trial for Assange
Garzon to insist on fair trial for Assange
by anonymous Wed Jul 25 20:07:55 PDT 2012

PROMINENT Spanish lawyer Baltasar Garzon, who is to head the legal defence of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, says he will insist on a fair trial for his client.
The judicial investigation into Assange's activities was "a kind of persecution" for his role as founder of WikiLeaks and for revealing political wrongdoing through the whistleblowing website, Garzon said in the southern Spanish city of Torres on Wednesday.

The allegations and investigations against Assange in countries like Sweden were "inconsistent", and there was "something else" behind them, the lawyer said.
"We intend to demonstrate that (Assange) is not getting the right to a fair defence, presumption of innocence and a trial with all the guarantees," Garzon said.
Garzon said he had been appointed to co-ordinate Assange's legal representation in countries where legal action or investigations were under way, listing Britain, the United States, Sweden, Ecuador and Australia.

Garzon, who gained international attention in 1998 when he issued an arrest warrant for former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet for crimes against Spanish citizens, met with Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported.

Holed up in the embassy since late June, Assange has requested political asylum to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over alleged sexual offences.
He has said he fears extradition from Sweden to the United States, where he could face espionage charges over his organisation's numerous leaks of confidential diplomatic documents.
Ecuador will wait until the end of the Olympics on August 12 before announcing its decision on the issue, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said on Wednesday.

Garzon formerly served as a judge with Spain's central criminal court, the Audiencia Nacional, where he launched investigations into alleged human rights violations in Latin America and elsewhere.
