Putney is situated in a corner of South West London. In recent years accommodation developments along the riverside have seen the area become more fashionable among affluent young professionals. Although this is not really an area which a tourist on a time-limited stay in London would opt to visit - this is a great little place to explore if you are a resident of London or in nearby Surrey.
Row, Row, Row Your Boat...
Every March the eyes of the nation are drawn to the Putney riverside for the showcase event, The University Boat Race. The competition between Cambridge and Oxford Universities is both a televised and popularly visited occasion. This is a traditional rowing-boat race which has been an annual fixture in the sporting calendar since 1856. The race starts at Putney Bridge and finishes at Chiswick Bridge. Putney taxis service the area during this time and should be available to pre-book, perfect for your visit.
Feeling Peckish In Putney?
The Half Moon pub is a great place to relax with decent grub and a great atmosphere. Almost every night of the week they have a selection of live music. The menu changes almost weekly but in general the menu is typical solid British gastropub dining. A fine selection of beers and wines are on sale to wash down that nosh. Putney taxi cabs can come to you, so you don’t need to stagger too far to find your lift home.
Putney High Street
Leading down to Putney Bridge, the high street offers all you could want from your typical British shopping area. There are numerous cafes, ranging from the standard Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Pret and Costa, to the more boutique like Neuhaus, Rogerios and Moomba Bar & Kitchen. These are pleasant places to meet with friends or simply watch the world go by. All of your grocery shopping and convenience store needs are met on this little street too!
Other Attractions In Putney
The Putney Arts Theatre is a fringe theatre with a main auditorium which seats over 150 people and a smaller studio with enough room for 50 patrons. The stage has been home to some illustrious names and productions down the years and is definitely worth a look if other types of entertainment, such as bars and clubs, aren’t your cup of tea.
Taxis in Putney can take you down the road to the National Tennis Centre: the favourite practice courts of British Number 1, Andy Murray. This impressive and state-of-the-art complex is a great place to burn off some of those extra pounds and then put them all back on again with their fine-dining experience.
