Cameron admits ties between British MPs and press became 'too close'
by anonymous Thu Jun 14 18:56:58 PDT 2012

LONDON: The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has admitted the relationship between politicians and the press has grown ''too close'' and that spin doctoring and government attempts to keep control of the 24-hour news agenda has meant the ''pendulum has swung too far''.

Mr Cameron spent close to six hours in the witness box in London yesterday as counsel for the Leveson inquiry, Robert Jay, QC, embarked on a forensic grilling of his views on the media, regulation of ownership and plurality and his relationships with media figures including Rupert Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks.

''I think this relationship has gone wrong for … it's never been perfect, there's always been problems. I think in the last 20 years the relationship has not been right, I think it has been too close. I think we need to get it on a better footing,'' he said.

The Prime Minister appeared well prepared, if occasionally nervous. He provided the inquiry with an 84-page written witness statement that included a list of all 1400 meetings he held with media proprietors and editors during his time in opposition. This works out to about 26 each month, dropping to about 13 a month since his election to government in 2010.
Mr Cameron also gave the inquiry a breakdown of meetings with James Murdoch (15), Rupert Murdoch (10) and the former News International chief, Mrs Brooks (19).
However, he conceded these meetings would not include social or weekend encounters, particularly those with Mrs Brooks. ''Yes, our relationship grew when she married Charlie Brooks, who is a friend and neighbour,'' he told the inquiry.
